Cleaning & Care

How to take care of your jewellery?

Whatever the piece of jewellery, once you own it you want it to be with you for the long run. At NOWN we only sell gold filled and sterling silver jewellery. These are good quality but affordable materials, so they can last for a long time. Because just like you, we want you to enjoy our jewellery for a long time. With these easy tips and tricks you will keep your pieces clean, bright and shiny.

  • Avoid applying perfumes, lotions, sprays, creams etc. directly onto your jewellery.
  • If you are not wearing your jewellery store them in a box or pouch in a cool and dry place.
  • Remove your jewellery before exercising to prevent breakage or deforming.
  • Wear your jewellery in the shower? Yes! Water won't make the colour wear off. Just be aware that, just like with any jewellery, water will reduce the shine and possibly the teint of gold filled over time. Silver might oxidise and the colour may become darker. The metal itself can handle it though! And the good news, gold filled and sterling silver can be cleaned easily. How? Read on and you will find out.
  • Chlorinated swimming pools and jacuzzis aren't friends with any type of jewellery. So make sure to take your jewellery off before your swim to avoid damaging your pieces. The same applies to heavy cleaning agents, like detergents and acids.

Now lay your piece of jewellery in a soap and water mixture and let it sit for about ten minutes. Take the piece out of the mixture and brush it with a soft toothbrush. The dirt will be washed and brushed out of the little gaps.

How to clean silver jewellery?

Just like gold filled jewellery, all silver jewellery gets a bit tarnished. And with silver there is something else that happens over time: the surface of the material oxidises due to the exposure to air and oxygen which gives it a dark grey and less shiny look. This happens just by wearing them. They also collect leftovers of cream and soap as well as dust that gets stuck. So how do you keep your jewellery beautiful and shiny?

  • Fill a cup or small bowl with hot (not boiling) water and add some regular dish soap or mild liquid hand soap and give it a quick stir. Now lay your piece of jewellery in the soap and water mixture and let it sit for about ten minutes. Take the piece out of the mixture and brush it with a soft toothbrush. The dirt will be washed and brushed out of the little gaps.
  • Removing the dark grey oxygen layer off of your jewellery can be done with a silver-dip solution which is sold in many household stores and online shops. There are many different brands out there that offer silver cleaning solutions.
